ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) A rehabilitation project is being planned for a nearly 8-mi. (13 km) section of the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

Officials said the $54 million project is needed to fix potholes, alter dangerous sight lines and improve drainage between Spout Run and Interstate 495 in northern Virginia.

The parkway also needs an improved interchange at Route 123.

Garth Shull, chief of technical services for the project, said the parkway carries more traffic than it was designed to handle in the 1960s.

Two public information meetings will be held during the planning process. Shull said construction won’t begin until at least 2010. The work could take six years to complete.
