Manitowoc Cranes was awarded a $28.2 million contract to provide Grove all-terrain cranes to the U.S. Army. The GMK4060HC cranes (HC for heavy crane) are specifically engineered for military use and have unique features that make them suitable for job sites on a variety of terrains.

The Texas A&M University System plans to authorize construction on a $130 million combat development complex for the Army Futures Command at the RELLIS campus in Bryan, Texas. The Eagle reported on Aug. 2 that the complex will include a $50M facility with laboratories, accelerator space and offices.

Telsmith Inc. , a manufacturer of mineral processing equipment, recently welcomed back one of its southeastern field service technicians, Matthew Vereb, from a yearlong mission in Germany. Vereb started at Telsmith in 2016 as field service technician for the southeast territory, including Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi.

ANNISTON, Ala. (AP) The agency created to redevelop a former Army base in Alabama has sold the headquarters area for $2.3 million to a group that plans to renovate it for $23 million as an independent living complex. The McClellan Development Authority said the headquarters and four multi-story barracks are to be turned into 120 independent living apartments and other facilities including a clubhouse and fitness center.

The U.S. Army has awarded 15 companies a $540 million contract for construction and repair projects at National Guard units in Washington and Oregon. According to the Department of Defense, the National Guard Bureau received 28 bids for the firm-fixed-price contract.

The National Museum of the United States Army welcomed its first artifact on July 31. A 28-ton M3 Bradley Cavalry Fighting Vehicle was delivered to the museum's construction site near Fort Belvior before it was set in place on a reinforced concrete slab, Pentagram reported.

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) Arlington National Cemetery is moving ahead with plans to expand by roughly 50,000 spaces, extending the cemetery's life beyond 2050. The cemetery is run by the Army. For several years, military officials tried to negotiate a land swap with Arlington County that would allow the cemetery to expand and accommodate the county's needs as well.

The National Museum of the United States Army (NMUSA) is currently being built in Fort Belvoir, Va., within 30 minutes of Washington, D.C. At present, the Army is the only branch of the military without a national museum. According to the museum's website, it “will serve as the capstone of the Army Museum Enterprise and provide the only comprehensive portrayal of Army history and traditions.

Originally created in 1944 and known as the Servicemen's Readjustment Act, the G.I. Bill's primary purpose was to provide access to academic services, affordable mortgages and hospitals throughout a post-World War II country. Recent military veterans who are interested in joining the construction industry can take advantage the G.I.

Although many excel during their time in the armed forces, it can be difficult to make the adjustment to civilian life. Seemingly insignificant responsibilities like finding a job can be a tough process if you've just returned from a tour of duty.

As we approach Armed Forces Day, it's important to remember that military veterans have a lot to offer the civilian construction site. The U.S. Armed Forces teach a number of interpersonal skills easily transferred to other areas. Apart from specialized training and education, former military personnel are highly adept at developing strong professional bonds, cultivating skills in others and tracking productivity amongst multiple jobsites.
