Alex Lyon & Son held a sale Oct. 9 at Capital Tractor’s Latham, N.Y., location. Jamie Gibson, president of Capital Tractor, recently made the decision to consolidate operations between the company’s Latham store and the Greenwich, N.Y., location.

Remember the old Dunkin’ Donuts commercial? Fred the Baker would roll out of bed early in the morning and leave his house muttering, “Time to make the donuts.”Good old Fred knew his customers were depending on him. These days, it’s Kevin Strainer who rolls out of bed early in the morning, saying, “Time to build the donuts.”Strainer, owner of S&S Construction builds Dunkin’ Donuts shops throughout upstate New York, western Vermont and western Massachusetts.

Indian Fields Equipment has a lot on its plate. The family-owned business offers commercial construction and landscaping services, demolition, excavation, concrete and snow removal work, as well as a landscape supply store — and it has little time or patience for machinery (or dealers) that don’t perform.

When David Lobdell started his business in 1984, his equipment inventory consisted of only a small dozer, a Kubota tractor backhoe loader and a single axle dump. In those days, the company’s market area consisted primarily of Rensselaer and parts of Columbia and Albany counties in New York.

When William Hammersmith founded his business, Quality Construction, his friends mocked his small excavator by referring to it as a “Tonka.” Twenty-one years ago, before his son, Tony, and his wife, Lisa, joined the firm, Hammersmith started out humbly with just one employee — himself.
