LOGAN, Utah (AP) A small commercial nuclear reactor that a Utah energy cooperative wants to build in Idaho would be game-changing for energy customers if the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission approves the project, a high-ranking federal official said this week at a conference.

The unanimous decision Dec. 21 by the state's Public Service Commission will shape the future of the nation's nuclear industry, partly because the reactors at Plant Vogtle were the first new ones to be licensed and to begin construction in the U.S.

Westinghouse Electric Company recently announced it will be leaving the nuclear reactor construction business. This move is part of a series of steps the company has taken in recent months to make changes following its March decision to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
