Sawmills, also known as lumber mills, are facilities where logs are cut into lumber. Modern sawmills use a motorized saw, but before their invention boards were often hand sawn by two men with a whipsaw. The earliest known mechanical mills date back to the 3rd century AD in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), where a water-powered stone mill was found. As technology evolved throughout the years, mills became powered by steam, and eventually electricity. Computerization controls most aspects of today’s sawmills, which in addition to sawn timber produce sawdust, bark, woodchips and wood pellets. Portable sawmills are often used by woodworking hobbyists and homeowners looking to clear trees from their property. Stories about sawmills and other forestry equipment can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website. You can find new and used sawmills for sale from the leading equipment manufacturers right here.
