Approximately 200 applicants interviewed with AGC members in Birmingham and Florence during two job fairs.

Thirty of those applicants completed the requirements — a drug test and an OSHA 10-hour class — to become AGC Craftworker Affiliates.

“The job fairs are a crucial part of the AGC’s Craftworker Affiliate Program,” said Bill Caton, director of membership and public relations.

“Craftworker Affiliate candidates attend a job fair, fill out an application and interview with AGC member companies. They then complete an OSHA 10-hour and pass a drug test. Obviously, every candidate does not complete the entire program, but those who do are listed on the AGC Web site as AGC Craftworker Affiliates and are ready to hire. The names of those who complete are also sent to the AGC members who exhibited at the job fairs.”

High school students graduating from construction trades programs as well as others from the general population were invited to the Birmingham Section job fair.

A special effort was made to reach the Hispanic population through the AGC’s bilingual publication, El Constructor AGC, and Spanish language radio. KPI Latino, a marketing firm specializing in reaching out to the Hispanic market, also helped promote the event.

“This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in getting into this exciting industry with good pay and benefits,” said Henry T. Hagood Jr., Alabama AGC president. “Our companies are some of the best in the world and they offer excellent employment opportunities. This is also a great opportunity for our members to take a look at some talented people.”

Employers who exhibited at the job fairs were: Vulcan Painters, Scott Services, Wagstaff-Taylor, Universal Limited, Central Alabama Fabricators, Alabama Guardrail, Brasfield & Gorrie, Vulcan Materials, B.L. Harbert International, American Rotor Co., Amason and Associates, Simpson Commercial Contracting, Trawick Contracting, Alabama Erectors Inc., Dunn Construction Co., Boss Industrial Construction, Masonry Arts Inc., Superior Mechanical, Hendrix Glass, H&N Construction, Tim Rhodes Electric, Hearn Plumbing, Thompson-Fisher, Smith General Contractors and King & Associates.

“Every AGC member who exhibited said they thought the job fair was a huge success,” Caton said. “Most of them found four or five solid potential employment candidates. We plan to continue to have job fairs around the state and to continue to increase the potential pool of craftsmen.”
