Construction Equipment Guide

Komatsu America Corp.’s PC228USLC-3 short tail swing excavator with Tier III engine is now available at Columbus Equipment’s nine locations in Ohio. The new machine has a 148 flywheel hp (110 kW), an operating weight between 49,900 to 51,110 lbs. (22,226 to 23,183 kg) and a bucket capacity range of .66 to 1.57 cu. yds. (.5 to 1.2 cu m). Occupying a 180 degree swing width of 13 ft. 1 in. (3.9 m) with a loaded bucket, as well as a large counterweight that requires no additional clearance, the PC228USLC-3 is the ideal machine for working in confined areas such as roadways, bridges, urban areas or anywhere space is limited.

The PC228USLC-3 is equipped with the Komtrax technology, which sends machine operating information to a secure website utilizing wireless technology. Data such as operating hours, location, cautions and maintenance alerts are relayed to the web application for analysis. The Komtrax fleet monitoring system increases machine availability, reduces the risk of machine theft, allows for remote diagnosis by the distributor, and provides a wealth of other information to drive business efficiently and productively, according to the manufacturer.

The PC228USLC-3 excavator is equipped with the newly developed, powerful, low emission Komatsu SAA6D107E-1 electronically controlled common rail type engine that significantly reduces NOx emissions by 29 percent with a multi-staged fuel injection system. The engine meets EPA Tier III and EU stage 3A emission regulations.

The PC228USLC-3 is equipped with working modes designed to match engine speed, pump flow and system pressure to specific application requirements, giving the operator flexibility to match equipment performance to the job at hand. Economy mode now features four level settings, allowing the operator to achieve required production with the lowest possible fuel consumption. In the power mode the machine is set for maximum horsepower operation. Even if the pressure varies with the pump load, the engine speed is properly controlled, and the engine is always used near the rated output point. This mode is suitable for large production and heavy-load work since the engine output is fully utilized.

The lifting mode gives the operator seven percent more lifting force on the boom, making it ideal for situations such as lifting heavy pipe, or precise control with heavier loads. A breaker mode is now provided as an independent function that allows for maximum production and power.

Maintenance Made Easy

Equipped with Komatsu’s exclusive Equipment Management Monitoring System (EMMS), the PC228USLC-3 was designed to reduce costly downtime. EMMS continually monitors all critical excavator systems, alerting and guiding the operator should a problem occur. By preventing a small problem from becoming a major service issue, EMMS contributes to operating cost reduction. The system also tracks the preventive maintenance schedule, providing on-board warning as required maintenance becomes due. Error codes and troubleshooting assistance is available at the EMMS display, which minimizes diagnosis and repair time.

Spacious, Quiet Cab

Komatsu’s low-noise cab design uses a pressurized highly rigid cab and air filter to reduce noise and prevent external dust from entering the cab. The cab rests on fully-viscous damping mounts, minimizing vibration and noise from the machine body and reducing operator fatigue. An electronic engine, highly rigid cylinder block, low-noise muffler design and optimal arrangement of sound absorbing materials throughout the engine compartment further reduce dynamic noise.

Columbus Equipment Company has been selling and servicing heavy machinery since 1952. An exclusive dealer for Komatsu, the company has nine locations throughout Ohio.
