Liebherr has introduced fuel efficient, productive wheel loaders with tipping loads more than 33,000 lbs. (14,968 kg) — the “Generation 6” loaders. The new models L 566 2plus2 and L 580 2plus2 will replace the L 564 2plus2 and L 580 2plus2 wheel loaders. This step coincides with the implementation of the Tier III noise and emissions regulations for construction machine engines.

The new wheel loader series features higher power, improved operator comfort and additional safety devices, according to the manufacturer. The heart of the previous range has been retained: the Liebherr travel drive with its 2plus2 technology.

New Engines, Improved Power

At the center of the development of the new series was the continuation of the previous machine concept with the objective of achieving even higher productivity from the wheel loader in practical use.

The new Liebherr diesel engines are a core component. To meet the new Tier III noise and emissions regulations, Liebherr’s own engine factory, Liebherr-Machine Bulle S.A., Switzerland, has developed a new generation of diesel engines, which will become standard in Liebherr construction equipment with power requirements between 177 and 761 hp (132 and 567 kW).

The “Generation 6” wheel loaders feature an advanced cooling system, which takes into account the increased cooling requirement of the new diesel engines. The cooling system utilizes a hydraulic, cooling-on-demand system with a larger cooling area and an additional fuel-cooling unit. Redesigned hoods and access points maintain quick and easy serviceability and maintenance access.

Easier to Use, Maintain

The new cab design on the “Generation 6” wheel loaders is 28 percent larger than on the previous model. The larger cab increases visibility to the work area and adds to operator comfort while providing additional options for storage.

The cooling capacity of the standard air-conditioning system has been greatly increased. The routing of the air has been optimized with new automotive-style flap controls allowing fourzone ventilation within the cab.

Optimized access for maintenance increases efficiency: both the cooling unit and the engine compartment covers can be opened at the same time, making access to the cooling unit easier.

More Active, Passive Safety Devices

The “Generation 6” wheel loaders include the addition of several important safety devices. These include the single-part laminated front wind screen, large external mirrors, four floodlights on the front and generously sized steps for safe entrance to the cab. Collision protection also has been included in the rear ballast, and the rear lights have been directly incorporated into the ballast in order to avoid damage in the event of a rear collision
