Modern Machinery took a $300,000 swing yarder and converted it into a million-dollar machine. According to Russ Smith, territory manager, this was an incredible project for both Modern and for the customer.

“Retrofit created a million-dollar machine as close to new as possible,” Smith said. “New cab, fittings, hoses, electrical and hydraulics. You cannot buy a new machine as most take two years to receive after an order is placed. Only a few companies in the world manufacture new logging yarders.”

The rebuilt yarder has more electric and hydraulic components than the original had. The old framing was matched with a new undercarriage and mounting areas were fabricated for all the new hoses, electrical and the cab.

One of the biggest challenges was finding an indoor space to work on the machine. So, Modern built a brand-new facility to handle this project, as well as future projects, maintenance and repairs.

Smith said there were so many custom-manufactured pieces that they now have insight into future rebuilds and repairs.

“The major facility that was created can be used for maintenance and repairs,” he said. “This was a once-in-a lifetime project.”

The rebuilt yarder sold as soon as it was finished and should last about 10 years, with normal wear and tear, according to Smith. The proud, new owner is Jon Greenup Logging, Estacada, Ore.

Modern Machinery sells and rents heavy equipment to the construction, mining and forestry industries. The business began in 1944 with its Spokane, Wash., location and has expanded into other areas of Washington, as well as Montana, Idaho, Oregon and Russia.
