Construction Equipment Guide

Multiquip will unveil a prototype of the MQ H2G EarthSmart hydrogen fuel-cell powered generator (H2G) at Cine Gear Expo 2012, the premier film, video and digital media expo for the entertainment industry. The company also will showcase the SG1400 studio generator, the GloBug balloon light, the GB2000 GloBug Diffuser and the PSG6 inverter studio cart at booths #S318 (indoor) and #201(outdoor).

“Multiquip is leading the way in utilizing hydrogen fuel cell technology,” said Torsten Erbel, vice president product management, engineering and customer support of Multiquip.

“Building on the technological momentum of the award-winning H2LT light tower, we are anticipating strong results for the H2G, which was designed to make a significant environmental contribution. With just one unit, we are able to displace 900 gallons of diesel fuel per year, and eliminate 9.1 metric tons per year of CO2. Using the Greenhouse Gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy Use in Transportation Model [GREET] model, we achieve a 73 percent greenhouse gas savings using hydrogen instead of fossil fuels.”

As the industry’s first mobile hydrogen fuel cell-powered generator, the H2G is environmentally-friendly, pollution-free and does not produce particulate emission. Because the machine does not use fossil fuel sources, no combustion occurs in the process, making it safer for use in any environment, indoors or out. The generator operates cleanly with zero emissions and can be operated inside and for tunnel/underground applications, according to the manufacturer.

The ultra-efficient H2G can be operated for up to 26 hours at full load and is extremely quiet — boasting a low noise level of 44 decibels at 23 feet. It is reliable and requires low to minimal maintenance because there are virtually no moving parts (only one fan with meantime between failures of 40,000 hours), and no fuel to spill.

The full line of MQ Power studio generators, SG600, SG1400, SG1500, and SG1600, have been newly designed and updated to meet the demanding requirements of the entertainment industry with standard models ranging from 600 amps to 1600 amps.

Multiquip will display the operator-friendly, SG1400 studio generator, which is designed specifically for the entertainment industry to reduce noise and increase reliability. The unit features a microprocessor-based, digital controller providing a color graphic display and optional remote monitoring capability for a state-of-the-art control package. The updated controller can remotely monitor and operate the generator through a wireless Internet connection. A variable-speed hydraulic fan drive is used to allow the fan to spin slowly under smaller loads, providing more efficient airflow, while also reducing noise. The Cummins engine is equipped with an isochronous electronic governor that provides precise frequency control of ± 0.25 percent. An all-aluminum generator housing eliminates excess weight.

Multiquip also is exhibiting the PSG6 studio inverter generator cart that delivers 6,500 watts of dependable, sound attenuated power from a Honda GX390 engine. The product is suitable to provide portable power to any production at low noise levels with excellent voltage stability. Its rugged, but compact design with heavy duty pneumatic tires makes it easy to move in and out of any set.

The company also is displaying its stand-alone GloBug balloon light, a glare-free, 360 degree light that is rugged enough for a variety of settings ranging from film sets and special events to construction job sites. Its metal halide bulbs offers a high output of light — up to 110,000 lumens — and are shielded by a durable balloon to produce a non-glare light which reduces shadows and improves workplace safety. An electronic ballast design makes GloBug balloon lights lightweight and easy to handle.

Additionally, Multiquip is showcasing its GB2000 GloBug diffuser, a glare-free, 360 degree balloon light that mounts onto the T-bar assembly of Multiquip LT-12D and MLT-Series light towers. For greater diffused light coverage, the GB2000 incorporates two 1,000 watt metal halide bulbs to produce a high light output — up to 220,000 lumens, in addition to the 220,000 lumens produced by two of the metal halide lamps. The assembly connects to the light tower’s electrical ballasts and uses an integrated fan to inflate the diffuser balloon. This results in greater flexibility for light tower applications and allows crews to eliminate glare and shadows in the work area. The diffuser balloon inflates quickly, typically within 30 seconds of striking the lights and also has a quick restrike time.
