After more than 40 years in the demolition industry, LaVerne Sessler has reached another milestone in his remarkable career. At its 29th annual convention, National Association of Demolition Contractors (NADC) awarded Sessler, founder of Sessler Wrecking, its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.
“Vern is an innovator in our industry,” said Michael R. Taylor, NADC executive director. “Sessler Wrecking has been at the forefront in developing new and improved demolition techniques, and many of his contributions have increased safety for the entire industry. Just as important, Sessler Wrecking has been an outstanding corporate citizen, and NADC salutes Vern for his contributions to his community as well as to our industry.”
A Lifetime of
Achievement
Sessler’s expertise includes bridge demolition, for which he is recognized as a leader in New York State. Using engineered demolition plans and innovative hydraulic equipment, Sessler Wrecking completes approximately 35 bridge demolition projects a year in New York State. In 2000, the company was awarded a patent for “Process for Demolishing a Bridge Structure.”
Other accomplishments include taking down the five-story Money Tower, Syracuse, NY, parking garage after its collapse in 1993, and emergency demolition of an overhead bridge on the New York State Thruway. After a truck accident caused irreparable damage to the bridge, Sessler Wrecking removed the structure, allowing traffic to be restored in less than 10 hours.
The Aldrich Change Bridge in Macedon, NY, is more than 100 years old. Floodwaters washed the bridge off its abutment. In this pro bono project, Sessler Wrecking “rescued” the bridge, which is currently being restored and designated as an historical site.
In addition to running a successful demolition company, Sessler has been a member of NADC since 1984. He served as a member of the board of directors from 1992 to 1994. He also has been very active on the NADC Safety Manual Committee and the Public Relations Committee.
