The Nevada Chapter of the Associated General Contractors (AGC), through its Women in Construction Committee (WICC), concluded a 60-day school-supply-drive Aug. 9. Committee members reached out to the construction industry to collect school supplies for the students at Lemelson Stem Academy, a Title 1 school located in an at-risk community and AGC's Partner in Education.

More than twenty companies and individuals have donated everything from backpacks, pencils and notebooks to tissues and cleaning supplies.

"We wanted to make sure that every child and teacher at the school has the necessary materials to be able to focus on learning," said Morgan Miller, chairwoman of the AGC WICC. "We hope that we have lifted the burden on the parents who might struggle financially to be able to provide these essential items and on teachers, who shouldn't ever have to pay for these supplies out of their own pocket."

The goal of the AGC is to help ensure every student at Lemelson is positioned for success and has a quality education by providing support to the staff and students alike. As part of that commitment, the members of the Women in Construction Committee dedicated themselves to providing the needed supplies for every child and teacher at Lemelson.

"We are beyond thrilled at the success of this effort. I can't adequately express our gratitude to the companies and individuals who participated. Once again, the commercial construction industry has stepped up to make this community a better place to live," Miller said.

About the AGC

The AGC and its nearly 300-member firms represent nearly half of the Washoe County construction jobs.

The Nevada Chapter AGC was formed in 1939 by a group of Nevadans intent on replacing the dangerous gravel roads that connected Northern Nevada with modern pavement. They evolved into the modern AGC, whose goal is to use skill, integrity and responsibility to build a better community.

AGC membership has been the first to step up to be that good neighbor. These services include:

  • Donating labor and materials to local charity groups
  • Donating dollars for the University of Nevada scholarships since 1963, now more than $750,000
  • Supporting the Academy for Career Education, which provides construction education curriculum for Washoe County students.
  • Providing disaster relief with equipment and manpower during times of flood and fire.

The Nevada Chapter AGC has been active in national and regional construction issues including job site safety, vocational education and recognizing the best in local building.
