## Summary

## Article

Brasfield & Gorrie, one of Birmingham's largest construction firms, is overseeing a $65 million expansion of its corporate headquarters in the city's Lakeview District. The four-story, 88,000-sq.-ft. building will include office spaces, conference rooms, an event training center and auditorium.

“We've added more than 600 jobs in Alabama over the last five years, and that growth isn't slowing down,” Brasfield & Gorrie corporate affairs executive vice president Trey Clegg told Construction Equipment Guide. “We need more room for the people already here, better training facilities for the people coming in and expanded spaces to collaborate with our partners. This expansion is evidence of our long-term commitment to the city where we've laid our foundation and the people who choose to build their careers here.”

Clegg said the project will result in better opportunities.

“We're expecting to add a minimum of 80 new full-time positions with an average salary of $82,000 a year. Beyond the new jobs, we're creating more training and conference spaces to develop our people. Birmingham recently topped ADP's ranking as the best city for recent college graduates, and we want to be the place where that talent puts down roots.”

Construction began in August 2026. Clegg said the expansion will continue to shape the Lakeview District.

“We've invested over $100 million in our headquarters over the past several years. That level of sustained investment demonstrates our confidence in the people and energy of the Lakeview District, as the steady growth of our employee population has a direct and indirect economic impact on the surrounding retail and service businesses in the neighborhood.”

While there was no formal groundbreaking ceremony, Birmingham office employees gathered to cheer on the team of onsite craftworkers, celebrating with ice cream to mark the start of construction.

“We bring our best to every project, but there's something unique about building for your own company. You know the people who are going to fill those floors. That connection reinforces what we already believe — every building we put our name on should be something we're proud to walk into, whoever it's for, and we're committed to getting every detail right.”

Clegg stressed the chief concern when performing any project is keeping everyone out of harm's way.

“Safety leads everything we do, and building on an active campus where your own colleagues are working every day makes that even more real. It's also about quality and coordination. This building needs to reflect who we are as a company and doing that in an active urban district takes deliberate planning and clear communication at every step.”

That commitment was evident when adding an extra level to the firm's parking deck.

“Our self-perform concrete field experts finished on time and under budget. Logistically, we needed to construct the fourth level of the parking facility before commencing construction of the new building, and the team worked effectively not only to minimize the displacement of office employees during the five months of construction, but also to keep everyone safe while coexisting on our campus.”

Clegg noted the company partnered with the city of Birmingham, Jefferson County and the state to make the project a reality.

“The Alabama Legislature and Department of Commerce have a strong track record of funding vital programs that support business attraction and expansion opportunities for a variety of industries. We appreciate the state, city and county economic development partners who have consistently come alongside Brasfield & Gorrie over the last several years as we have reinvested in our campus, our team of employees and our commitment to our community.”

Work is going according to plan, according to project manager Sam Freese. He explained to Construction Equipment Guide that foundation and underground MEP rough-in have been completed for a majority of the building, along with initial site storm line installation. The first slab-on-grade pour also began in mid-September.

“Brasfield & Gorrie is self-performing the sitework package, with more than 12 of our craft members making up our sitework crew. Scope includes grading, site demo and site utility installation.”

Demolition included removal of two existing single-story buildings, a small parking lot owned by the company and miscellaneous hardscapes and landscaping removal. During construction, roughly 5,000 cu. yds. of material will be moved across the property.

“Major equipment being used on the project includes a Komatsu PC138 excavator; a Komatsu PC220 excavator; a Cat skid steer; a Skytrak 10K reach forklift; and a smooth drum roller,” said Freese. “All equipment is rented through B&G Equipment and Supply.”

Materials required to carry out the work include concrete, rebar, steel, thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) roofing, glazing, brick, stone, metal panels, metal framing, drywall and paint.

Construction milestones will include completion of the steel structure, the building dry-in next April and project completion in the first quarter of 2028. Freese said envisioning the final product is pleasing beyond words.

“Being that this project is for Brasfield & Gorrie and located at our main headquarters, it's very rewarding to play a small part in the company's growth. As a project team, we've been given a unique opportunity to interface with company leadership on a daily basis, and we have a great deal of support right next door as we make progress on the facility every day.”

Clegg added, “Knowing your own colleagues are going to walk through those doors every day gives this project a real sense of purpose. It's even more exciting to think about the people who aren't here yet. There's a whole generation of talent that's going to do great work inside those walls. Watching that future take shape is what makes the progress so rewarding.”
