PHOENIX (AP) Nearly 5 mi. (8 km) of new high occupancy vehicle lanes are now open eastbound on the Loop 101. The Arizona Department of Transportation said the new section runs between 7th Street and State Route 51 connecting to the existing HOV lanes just east of State Route 51.

ADOT said it marks a milestone in the $90 million Agua Fria Freeway HOV-lane construction project, which began in January 2011 and is scheduled for completion this fall.

The project involves building 30 mi. (48 km) of east- and westbound HOV lanes on the Agua Fria Freeway between Interstate 10 and State Route 51.

The project includes an additional travel lane in each direction along Loop 101 under Interstate 17 and widening freeway bridges at 19th, 31st and 35th avenues.
