Industry Projects and Programs
CIAP is funding a widening spectrum of projects to benefit the industry and the general public with improvement of New Jersey’s infrastructure as a priority. Typical of the array of CIAP contributions are significant financial support to Founding Association projects, The Road Improvement Program (TRIP), The New Jersey Alliance for Action Foundation, and a new Public Information and Education Program. Some projects funded include a statewide mapping project on construction project locations, expansion of construction safety services, web-site improvements, a storm water run-off best practices manual for hot mix asphalt producers, a Highway Work Zone Safety manual, and the “We Work With Pride” campaign.
Design/Build
CIAP is providing continuing construction industry input and coordination on issues relating to the use of design/build as an alternative project delivery system for public sector infrastructure projects. Focus of CIAP’s participation is on contract technical provisions, competition and bidding process, legal and liability issues, insurance and similar matters. NJDOT and other public agencies are continuing to bring a number of design/build projects forward using various methodologies.
PEC Construction Unity Dinner
On Feb. 22, 2001 at the Pines Manor in Edison, NJ, the Professional Engineers in Construction of New Jersey, along with several other construction organizations, will cosponsor the Silver Anniversary Construction Unity Dinner.
Edward O. Davis Memorial Student Summer Employment Scholarship Program
This program, introduced in 1985, provides scholarships and summer employment opportunities with a construction contractor. A tuition stipend is awarded to civil engineering or construction technology students commencing their junior or senior year in a baccalaureate program, who are employed during the summer in the construction industry.
The scholarships, named in honor of a founding trustee of the CIAP, have expanded to provide nine awards of $2,500 each and an overall award winner in the amount of $5,000. Students from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Rowan University, Rutgers University, Stevens Institute of Technology, Fairleigh Dickinson University and Drexel University are eligible. Also, students completing two-year associate degree programs at county or community colleges who are enrolling as juniors in one of the participating four-year colleges are eligible.
Commencing in 2000, the CIAP Education Committee will make up to 10 additional awards of tuition stipends of $1,000, named for Franklyn Grosso, a founding trustee of CIAP, to qualified students not selected for the Edward O. Davis program but employed with New Jersey construction contractors for a minimum of 12 weeks. All prospective juniors and seniors with interest in careers in the construction industry are eligible for these stipends, which are in addition to any salary paid by employers. Recipients are selected largely on a “fully qualified” basis to foster careers in the construction industry and a high percentage of applicants receive stipends.
Civil/Construction Engineering Technology Scholarship
In 1986, a program was established providing scholarships for students in Civil/Construction Engineering Technology at the Associate Degree level.
In 2000, eight scholarships in the amount of $750 were awarded to second-year students at the participating county/community colleges. CIAP has increased the available scholarships to a maximum of 17 for eligible students nominated by their respective colleges.
Participating county and community colleges nominate students for these scholarships. One or more scholarships may be awarded annually at each school.
Awards are generally made to construction technology students with an interest in a construction career entering the second year of a two-year Associate Degree program.
Awards to entering students can be made on a case-by-case basis. In 2001, scholarships will be increased to $1,500 each.
Student Resume Directory
CIAP now maintains a computerized resume directory which can be used by area contractors in locating candidates for positions requiring entry-level degreed professionals in civil engineering and construction technology. The resume file can be searched by qualification, job title, preferred location and other employment criteria.
