For the second time in two years, the Utility and Transportation Contractors Association (UTCA) received a national award recognizing the organization’s extraordinary efforts in the area of construction safety education and training. This most recent recognition was the Annual Circle of Excellence Award presented by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association.
UTCA’s recent construction safety efforts that were recognized for this award included its actions in developing a Silica Awareness program for New Jersey’s highway and road construction industry and strategic alliances that have fostered a heightened awareness about construction safety. The association also was recognized for expanding its Web site so that others interested in construction safety could obtain materials from UTCA.
The silica monitoring program was conducted in cooperation with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the New Jersey Department of Transportation and will lead to the implementation of an industry silica safety program involving education, medical evaluation and respiration-fit testing. Recent strategic alliances have involved the state’s water works industry and OSHA which have led to the offering of specifically focused construction education seminars and programs.
One year ago, UTCA received Vice President Gore’s Hammer Award which recognized the association’s joint efforts with OSHA, NJDOT and Laborer Locals 172/472 in promoting work-zone safety for construction employees.
