HONOLULU (AP) America’s biggest homebuilder has bought land on Maui and the Big Island for three new housing projects.

D.R. Horton’s Schuler Division, which has built more than 8,000 housing units in the islands, said Dec. 13 it had purchased two parcels for developments in Lahaina and one in Waikaloa Village.

Five acres along Maui’s Honoapiilani Highway across from the planned Lahaina Gateway Center will become Ho’onanea at Lahaina, featuring 100 units in multifamily buildings, the company said.

A second Lahaina project, dubbed Opukea, will have 114 units in two- and four-story buildings also to be built along the highway.

Both projects are expected to begin construction next year and go on the market in 2007. The builder earlier developed the Legends at Maui Lani project in Kahului.

Mike Jones, Schuler Division president, said D.R. Horton expects to become a leader in new construction in the Lahaina area.

The Big Island project will feature 100 units in multi-family structures off Waikoloa Road, with construction set to begin in late 2007 and sales in 2008. The builder has other projects in Waimea and Kona and could add more units to Waikoloa, Jones said.

D.R. Horton built 45,000 homes last year with projects in 21 states. Its Schuler Division has been building homes in Hawaii since 1973, first as a separate company and now as part of D.R. Horton.
