Brick Recycling Company recently increased its productivity in a big way.

The six-year-old company owns a metal scrap recycling yard in Brick, NJ, where it accepts materials from a host of neighboring municipalities, as well as demolition contractors, tradesmen and Brick residents. There, the company processes the scrap into P&S (plate and structural steel) and number 1 and 2 steel.

Working toward the point of processing the scrap, however, was frequently time-consuming.

“We were cutting down much of the larger, heavier metal with only a small linkage shear and crew members with torches,” said Peter DeCenzo III, vice president of Brick Recycling Company. “Some of this material would take two people, two weeks to completely cut it all down.”

That was until this past August when the company purchased both a Volvo EC290BLC excavator and a Genesis GXP500R rotating shear from Penn-Jersey Machinery in Somerville, NJ.

“We obviously wanted to increase productivity, so I called Ron Poltorak [territory manager of Penn-Jersey Machinery] and he made some recommendations,” said DeCenzo. “I went to test-drive the EC290BLC, and I liked the way it felt to operate. Plus it had enough power operate the larger GXP500R shear.”

DeCenzo added that the EC290BLC provides him with a small, yet powerful excavator, one that could still be transported on his company’s 50-ton trailer.

“We were looking to still have a mobile excavator, but without having to break the machine down,” he said. “We already had a 50-ton lowboy, so we didn’t want to buy a bigger one and a different truck. In both the 290 and 500, we got the perfect package because they fit into the parameters of the equipment that we already had.”

Operator comfort also has been a pleasant surprise.

“It’s probably the best climate-controlled machine I’ve been in,” DeCenzo said. “It has a cup holder, heated seat, and virtually all the creature comforts one could ask for. Our yard superintendent, Frank Rotondo, loves it.”

Although Brick Recycling only purchased the EC290BLC and GXP500R three months ago, it must seem like years away based on how productive the company has become.

“Not only are we able to process everything into a better grade, we’re also saving a massive amount of time,” said DeCenzo.
