The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has joined with the Utility and Transportation Contractors Association (UTCA) and the construction trades to emphasize workplace safety for New Jersey construction workers. The partnership is available to all heavy-highway, marine, utility and environmental remediation construction firms that are members of the association.

This partnership agreement was executed by Patricia Clark, regional administrator of OSHA in New York, which covers New Jersey, and James Reid, president of UTCA at the time. The goal of the alliance is to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities by 4 percent annually, increase the number of contractors who implement effective safety and health programs and decrease worker compensation costs.

While signing the agreement at a special ceremony conducted during the recent UTCA convention, Patricia Clark commented, “This is an innovative new venture for New Jersey’s construction industry. We hope that contractors are chosen for jobs who are participants in the program and because they have demonstrated a commitment to safety and health.”

UTCA has established a comprehensive program of safety services to its members over the past years. Activities include offering a series of construction safety seminars, initiatives involving trenching safety and silica monitoring and the development and utilization of a safety directors forum.
