Within Monroe County, PA, located in the Pocono Mountains, another new housing development is being planned in an area that has seen strong growth in recent years.

However, before the houses can be built, Ben Pickarski, of Pickarski Inc., will be doing the site preparation work.

Pickarski, who has been working in the area over the past few decades, will rely on his fleet of Cat equipment. The project calls for the site preparation of more than 70 home sites for utility, sewer and water lines.

For this current project, Pickarski bought a new Cat 330CL excavator from Cleveland Brothers, which is his third.

“It’s appropriate for us,” said Pickarski. “It’s large enough to do the big work, but the operating cost is low enough and it can do the wide variety of tasks that we need.”

The company also is currently utilizing Caterpillar D5G XL and D6R XL dozers, a D250E truck, IT28G, and a CS563D compactor. The job began in March 2003 and is still ongoing.

Before Ben Pickarski started his construction business in 1974, he had owned a landclearing and logging operation in northeastern Pennsylvania.

He bought his first piece of equipment, a Cat D6C, from Cleveland Brothers in 1972. He now owns a fleet of Cat equipment and has been a loyal Cat owner for more than 30 years.

Parts availability is one of the factors that Pickarski said keeps him buying Caterpillar equipment. His relationship with Caterpillar dealer, Cleveland Brothers, also is key.

“They are exceedingly helpful,” Pickarski said. “That’s an enormous factor with us. Obviously there will be bumps in the road, and that’s where Cleveland Brothers, as a company, shines in presenting solutions to help our business excel. Our relationship with Cleveland Brothers has been very satisfying for the past 30 years. Truly they are our business partner.”

Pickarski now employs approximately 20 employees. Three current employees have more than 25 years with the company. Pickarksi’s son, Aaron, also is actively involved in the company. Trained as a civil engineer, he is now gaining the practical experience that will prove to be beneficial when running his father’s business in the future.
