The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) opened registration on Dec. 16, 2009, to its annual Professional Development Conference (PDC) and Exposition, SAFETY 2010, to be held June 13 to 16, 2010, at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, Md.

New items this year include a first time special government conference rate for non-member government employees as well as a first-time youth technical tour for attendees’ guests and children involving a behind-the-scenes safety tour of Camden Yards in Baltimore. There also is a new executive track with sessions taking place throughout the conference program that are specifically geared toward the executive level. The PDC will have close to 400 events in conjunction with 200 concurrent sessions, including technical tours of Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab, Camden Yards, John Paul Reed Smith Guitar manufacturing site and more.

Keynote speakers include: Andrew Winston, author of the upcoming book “Green Recovery” and co-author of “Green-to-Gold,” the best-selling book that shows what works and what doesn’t when companies go green; Geoffrey Colvin, editor at large for FORTUNE magazine; and luncheon keynote speaker Joe Malarkey presenting “Choose to Lose” to discuss the opportunities that are hidden in adversity.

The conference once again will feature an executive summit panel consisting of senior level management discussing views on the importance of employee safety and health and the expectations business and industry leaders have on the role of SH&E professionals. Key issue roundtables also will be offered during the concurrent session periods where attendees can discuss and share ideas, challenges and successes, as well as network.

Professional development topic tracks available at the conference will include: safety management; technical/engineering/standards; regulatory issues and government; career and personal development; international issues; ergonomics; risk management and insurance; construction and mining; environment and hazardous material; transportation; business skills; fire protection; consulting; health and industrial hygiene; healthcare; training and education; emergency management and security; Spanish language sessions; and the new executive track.

The fundamentals program will offer an introduction to a broad range of topics for those new to the safety profession or those wishing to review the basics. The fundamentals sessions will include: an overview of regulatory compliance; hazard identification and control; workplace health; basic safety management; risk management; fire protection; and the environment.

The exposition, which will be held during the conference, will feature many products aimed at enhancing safety including alarm and signaling devices, auto safety devices, biological detection, maintenance material and devices, computer services, signage, drug testing, education and training aids, emergency aids, ergonomics, eye and face protection, and much more.

As for ASSE’s PDC and Exposition, SAFETY 2009, held in San Antonio, it exceeded expectations in the number of exhibitors and square feet sold, despite the economy. More than 380 companies exhibited including Fortune 500 companies, federal agencies, non-profit organizations such as the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association, colleges and more, including 70 new companies. Many launched new products and provided interactive exhibits. About 3,500 people from 36 countries attended Safety 2009.
