Keystone Chapter, Associated Builders & Contractors Inc. (ABC) honored two firms for their dedication to safety at ABC’s recent Excellence in Construction Gala, which was held at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center on July 20, 2005.

Each year in conjunction with the Excellence in Construction Competition, the ABC Keystone Safety Committee promotes a safety contest that is open to all chapter general contractor and specialty contractor members.

This contest is designed so that every firm, no matter the size, is eligible to win. The winners of the first round were recognized at the April Membership Dinner. Entrants who received the Gold Level status were invited to compete in the next step of the competition, which required each firm to submit a final application with supporting documentation.

Frey Lutz Corporation, Lancaster, was honored as the specialty contractor receiving the award for safety.

This company’s management takes on an important role in the safety efforts of the company by being involved in both of its in-house safety committees. Frey Lutz’s experience modification factor is considerably lower than the industry average, and has been for the past decade.

In addition, its OSHA incident rate is consistently below the industry average. The Frey Lutz Corporation has won this particular award multiple times due to its strong commitment to safety.

The general contractor who received this year’s award was Benchmark Construction Co. Inc., Brownstown.

This company’s management is involved in the day to day handling of insurance claims and monitoring its job-site safety performance. Subcontractors are mandated to follow strict job-site safety rules and regulations, and the safety records of all subcontractors are reviewed prior to being awarded the job.

In addition, foremen conduct safety inspections to identify unsafe conditions on the site, and all unsafe conditions are immediately corrected.

The sponsor of this competition is Murray Insurance Associates Inc., Lancaster.
