The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) Commission May 1 appointed H.B. “Buck” Limehouse Jr. as the new executive director.

Limehouse, who started working at the post May 2, previously served on the SCDOT Commission. He was appointed commission chairman by Gov. Carroll Campbell in 1994. He was reappointed commission chairman by Gov. David Beasley in 1995, serving until 1999.

Tony L. Chapman, who has served as acting executive director since December, returned to his previous duties at state highway engineer.

Limehouse has been involved in many efforts to improve the quality of transportation in South Carolina. During his tenure as SCDOT Commission chairman, and as a member of the State Infrastructure Bank Board, he initiated several major transportation projects that totaled in the billions of dollars in value. Some of those projects include the Cross Island Parkway, the Southern Connector, the Conway Bypass and the Carolina Bays Parkway.

Following his tenure on the SCDOT Commission, Limehouse served as a consultant to the Georgia DOT in 2002. His focus was the Northern Arc project, a 60-mi. (97 km) high-speed, limited access freeway north of Atlanta.

Among his numerous honors, Limehouse was named “Transportation Advocate of the Year” in 1995 by the South Carolina Transportation Policy Council, and he received the Order of the Palmetto from the governor in 1995 and 1999.
