The National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA) has awarded Staker & Parson Companies five Environmental Eagle Awards for its commitment to the environment. The Environmental Eagle awards program recognizes aggregate producers that meet and exceed technical environmental and regulatory requirements.

Staker & Parson Companies received four Silver awards and one Bronze award for the following sites: Brigham City North Facility, South Weber Facility, McGuire Facility, Beck Street Quarry and Keigley Quarry.

“There were many very strong contenders for this important and meaningful award,” said NSSGA Environmental Committee Chairman Doug Palmore of Luck Stone Corp. in Richmond, VA. “The accomplishments of these operations demonstrate the highest level of commitment to environmental stewardship that runs throughout America’s aggregates industry. Clearly, these operations distinguished themselves and should be very proud of their accomplishments.”

The Environmental Eagle Award program was created in 1992 as a means to nationally recognize those companies committed to protecting and preserving the natural environment surrounding their operations. Eligibility for the award is open to any operation actively involved in the production of aggregates, which meets all minimum federal, state and local regulatory requirements and standards, exhibits no pattern of violations and has not experienced any significant violations of applicable environmental standards.

“We hold a corporate commitment to act as a good neighbor to the communities and environment we work in,” said John Parson, CEO of Staker & Parson Companies. “We have taken tremendous measures in our operations to deliver on that promise and are honored that the NSSGA has recognized our team’s efforts.”

A four-person panel composed of representatives from academia, the construction industry, a state or federal regulatory agency, an environmental awareness group and the national trade press judged the entries on five different criteria.

The three technical requirements were: extent to which the operation’s environmental control measures produce measurable results better than regulatory requirements; extent to which an operation has implemented effective environmental control measures; and quality and effectiveness of an operation’s pollution prevention and waste minimization programs.

The two non-technical were: quality and effectiveness of the operation’s proactive environmental program; and degree of employee involvement in environmental programs.

About the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association

The National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association represents the crushed stone, sand and gravel — or aggregates — industries. Member companies produce more than 90 percent of the crushed stone and 70 percent of the sand and gravel consumed annually in the United States.

More than three billion tons of aggregates were produced in the United States in 2003 at a value of approximately $14.4 billion, contributing $37.5 billion to the GDP of America.

The aggregates industry workforce is made up of approximately 120,000 men and women. Every $1 million in aggregate sales creates 19.5 jobs, and every dollar of industry output returns $1.58 to the economy.
