Stelax Industries Ltd. announced on Oct. 3 that a contract has been received for a second project to use NUOVINOX in Alberta, Canada. The project is -- Highway 986 Bridge Over an Unnamed Watercourse, East of Buffalo project, which is part of Alberta Transportation’s 2002 Peace Region Bridge Rehabilitation Program. The NUOVINOX rebar will be used in conjunction with existing carbon rebar and replace corroded carbon rebar in the deck and parapet rehabilitation project.

The first Alberta Transportation project to use NUOVINOX, was on the Sturgeon River Bridge Project, which won the "Award of Excellence – Transportation Infrastructure" from the Consulting Engineers of Alberta at their 2002 Showcase Awards banquet held in Vancouver, B.C. UMA Engineering was honored for its work on the project, which attained Alberta Transportation’s goal to construct a new bridge over the Sturgeon River that would have a 100-year service life.

Approximately 54,000 lbs. of stainless steel clad NUOVINOX rebar was used on the project. The new bridge also was constructed on alignment with the existing bridge, which allowed it to stay open during construction.

The PCI-Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute 2002 Design Awards has selected the Sturgeon River Bridge Project for the Best Bridge with Spans Between 65 and 135 Feet award. The Sturgeon River Bridge project was one of 18 winners in some 140 submissions to the PCI.

The award was presented to UMA Engineering at the Concrete Bridge Conference in Nashville, TN, on October 6th to 9th, 2002. Stelax Industries Ltd. and UMA Engineering jointly participated in the special poster session held on Tuesday, October 8th. This special poster session was for nine award winners to set up individual displays of the unique features of the project and answer questions.

Harmon Hardy, chairman of Stelax Industries Ltd., stated: "The company is proud to be a contributor to the ’Best Bridge’ design award with its NUOVINOX product. The recognition of Stelax NUOVINOX as a major contributor to the 100-year life cycle of bridges is continuing to be recognized throughout the world."

Headquartered in Dallas, TX, Stelax Industries Ltd. produces two separate product lines: NUOVINOX, a stainless steel cladded product with a carbon steel core utilizing the company’s unique patented manufacturing process and StelaBlast, steel abrasive shot pellets, which are used as an abrasive cleaner and polisher in steel manufacturing.
