The M3 — the second machine in the TESMEC Mechanical series of trenchers — is in the 95,000 to 130,000 lb. (43,091 to 58,967 kg) weight class and is dedicated to the mechanical drive system similar to the larger M5. The mechanical drive system allows for a slower chain speed used in digging hard, abrasive rock such as limestone, basalt, lava, malapie and granite.

The machine uses a Caterpillar power module consisting of the Cat C9 350 hp (261 kW) Tier III engine, transmission and differential. For the customer’s convenience, the power module can be serviced by any authorized Caterpillar dealer worldwide.

The Cat C9 Tier III engine allows for better fuel efficiency and the Caterpillar torque converter drive transmission has a deeper stall ratio, which allows for higher digging chain pull force at slower speeds, according to the manufacturer.

The M3’s maximum digging capabilities of 40 in. (101 cm) wide and 12 ft. (3.6 m) deep make the machine a versatile, solid performer for any project. Although capable of 500 to 700 ft. (152 to 213 cm) per minute its mechanical drive system allows for as little as 115 ft. (35 m) per minute. Over the life of a typical trenching machine working at its normal capacity, an owner will spend more on ground engaging tools than the machine’s original cost. The M3’s slower speed and chain pull force enhances digging tool life dramatically, according to the manufacturer.

In a standard configuration, the lighter weight M3 is easy to transport and normally will not require a transportation permit. To enhance performance, the M3 has an improved elevating cab that raises to 42 in. (107 cm), exceeding most models by 12 in. (30.5 cm) and has 360 degree visibility.

TESMEC developed the M3 to work in ambient temperature of up to 135 F (57.2 C) at full horsepower for extended periods of time. There is an optional service brake and a pendant control can be installed for more efficient ground servicing.

Due to many contractors working at night in high traffic areas and adhering to various city and state regulations as well as for the comfort and safety of their operators, TESMEC offers an optional light package for night time operations.

TESMEC was established in 1951 to produce multiple digging and stringing products on a worldwide basis and opened the Alvarado, Texas, facility in 1984. The trencher division manufactures machines that are developed to work in harsh environs such as oil and pipeline, utility, telecom and power cable installations, bulk excavation in quarries and dewatering.
