Driving along County Road 85 in Autauga County is going to be complicated for the next year, as three bridges are set for replacement.

County engineer John Mark Davis told The Montgomery Advertiser that work is set to begin Monday on replacing the bridge over Pine Level Creek. That section of road, near County Road 104, will be closed to through traffic for the three to four months the work is expected to take.

Drivers can take two alternate routes — U.S. 31 and County Road 40, Davis said.

The next two bridges set for work cross Mortar Creek and South Mortar Creek on the stretch of I-85 between County Road 40 and Highway 143.

The bridges, which have wooden pilings, were built around 1968 and have reached the end of their service life, he said. The new bridges will have steel pilings, encased in concrete.

The three projects will cost about $2.2 million, and the work is expected to take three to four months per bridge, he said.

The work is part of the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Project effort.

The Autauga County Commission is paying 20 percent of the cost, with federal dollars handling the balance, Davis said. —CEG
