On Jan. 6, the U.S. Agency for International Development announced it awarded a $1.8 billion contract to rebuild Iraq’s infrastructure to the engineering firm Bechtel.

The contract, the second one awarded to the company, will fund projects over the next two years in Iraq ranging from repairing power facilities, water and sanitation systems, to the continued rehabilitation of airport facilities and additional work as the seaport of Umm Qasr.

Bechtel, based in San Francisco signed a deal with USAID in April 2003 to rebuild Iraq’s heavily damaged infrastructure. So far, that contract has clocked up approximately $1 billion and will run until December.

For the latest contract, Bechtel has teamed with Parsons Corp. of Pasadena, CA, as well as Horne Engineering Services, Fairfax, VA.

The $1.8 billion comes from $18.6 billion in reconstruction funding appropriated by Congress last year.
