LITTLE ROCK (AP) Widening 4.6 mi. of U.S. 62 southwest of Fayetteville to four lanes could begin in a few weeks, a state highway commissioner said.

A Fayetteville company, APAC-Arkansas Inc., offered the apparent low bid on the project, $11,178,979, according to a news release from the state Highway and Transportation Department.

The work will widen the highway to four lanes from its intersection with Arkansas 170, east of Farmington, to the Illinois River southwest of that community, the release said.

The work also will include a continuous center turn lane as the highway passes through Farmington.

Jonathan Barnett, of Siloam Springs, vice chairman of the state Highway Commission, said the project would help ease traffic problems in the area.

“Widening Highway 62 in this growing area of Washington County will improve the flow of traffic and mean safer travel for motorists,” Barnett said.

The highway agency also announced these other apparent low bids on major projects:

• Pike County, repaving 13 mi. of Arkansas 27 from Murfreesboro to Kirby, $1,822,357, R.D. Plant Contracting Co., Murfreesboro.

• Ouachita County, replacing a 105-ft. section of the U.S. 79 bridge over Woodard Lake, north of Camden, $1,109,614, Southern Pavers Inc., Pine Bluff.

• Benton County, repaving 4 mi. of U.S. 412 from the Oklahoma state line to Arkansas 59, $1,109,614, McCormick Asphalt Paving and Excavation Inc., Ozark.

• Grant County, repaving 10.5 mi. of U.S. 270, from the Saline River east to Arkansas 46 in Sheridan, $1,032,513, Cranford Construction Co., North Little Rock.
