Vehicle Tracking Solutions of Deer Park has been selected to provide real-time fleet monitoring for Suffolk County’s Department of Public Works, it was announced June 10 by company founder and President John M. Cunningham Jr.

“We have been tracking over 25,000 vehicles on Long Island and in the New York metropolitan area for nearly 2,000 customers who have been enjoying fuel savings, enhanced safety and the security of knowing how their fleet is being used,” said Cunningham. “We are pleased and proud to bring these benefits and savings to Suffolk County and the people it serves.”

Local municipalities (towns, villages, school or fire districts) also can purchase or lease VTS monitoring equipment and services off this Suffolk County contract, Cunningham noted.

“Our DPW fleet is a substantial public asset and we must ensure our taxpayers it is being used in the most effective manner,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “I implemented GPS tracking in the Town of Babylon when I was Supervisor and found it saved taxpayer dollars and improved efficiency and accountability.”

Under the terms of a five-year agreement, VTS will provide onboard GPS devices for Suffolk DPW vehicles along with access to a web-based system that will enable the county to monitor:

• Real-time locations of its entire fleet;

• Speed, direction, routes, stops, idle status and hours of operation of any vehicle with an installed unit.

The system also provides speeding notifications based upon posted speed limits on highways and local roads, Android and iPhone apps to track usage, and e-mail or text message alerts.

“We are able to provide municipalities, not-for-profits and businesses in all industries the most competitive prices backed by locally based support and service,” Cunningham stated.

The company, founded in 2002, presently provides GPS tracking services to a number of municipal fleets including the towns of Babylon, Brookhaven, Huntington and North Hempstead, the Suffolk County Water Authority and many fire and ambulance districts.

According to Cunningham, fuel consumption increases by nearly ten percent when a vehicle travels just five miles per hour over the speed limit. Fuel also is wasted when drivers leave an engine idling during a long stop such as a meal break or phone call.

Real-time monitoring of speed and idling allows a fleet manager to quickly address poor driving habits, Cunningham explained. Additionally, knowledge that their speed and idling is being monitored can lead to driver self-correction and prevent unauthorized use of vehicles.

“It has been proven again and again that our system establishes safe driving habits,” Cunningham said.
