Construction has begun on a new headquarters building for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) at 1900 Pennsylvania Ave. in downtown Washington, D.C.
The Clark Construction Group Inc. is serving as general contractor on the new 650,000-sq.-ft. (60,387 sq m) office building. CarrAmerica Realty Corporation of Washington, D.C., is the development manager responsible for the overall management and administration of the project.
“We are pleased that construction of 1900 Pennsylvania Ave. is now under way. The project has been in development to enable IMF to create a more efficient physical plant that will consolidate a number of operations currently spread around the District of Columbia. We expect our newest building will enhance the Foggy Bottom neighborhood and the operations of IMF, and we look forward to the project’s completion in 2005,” said Inger Prebensen, deputy director of IMF’s Technology and General Services Department, which is overseeing the project.
Designed by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners of New York, 1900 Pennsylvania Ave. will be located adjacent to the International Monetary Fund’s existing headquarters at 700 19th Street, N.W.
The project will feature an atrium, three levels of underground parking, a 450-seat meeting facility, a training facility for the IMF Institute, a two-story public restaurant at the corner of 20th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, and retail at the corner of 19th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.
Weihe Design Group of Washington, D.C., is serving as the associate architect.
In addition to Clark and the architects, the project team includes GHT Limited, of Arlington, VA, mechanical/electrical engineer; Tadjer Cohen Edelson Associates, of Silver Spring, MD, structural engineer; VIKA Inc., of Reston, VA, civil engineer; and Kroll Schiff & Associates Inc., of Chicago, security consultant.
The Clark Construction Group Inc. is headquartered in Bethesda, MD.
