Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Georgia recently honored the winners of its biannual Excellence in Construction (EIC) competition and annual safety award program.
Winners of ABC of Georgia's 2018 EIC awards competition, along with recipients of ABC's annual safety awards, were recognized recently at a gathering of 400 individuals at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Ga.
Georgia chapter board chairman Rob Cooper of Ivey Mechanical Company LLC; ABC of Georgia Safety Forum chair Pat Devero of McCarthy Building Companies; keynote speaker and board member Robert Maddux of KDC Real Estate Development & Investments; Associated Builders and Contractors' national vice president of EH&S and Workforce Development Greg Sizemore; and ABC of Georgia President and CEO Bill Anderson took part in the proceedings.
“It's an honor to be here at the majestic Fox Theatre to honor the outstanding projects built by ABC members,” said Cooper. “Just as the Fox has stood the test of time, so will the construction work that we recognize here tonight.”
The EIC program highlights the innovation, quality and vision of a project's entire construction team — general and specialty contractors, architects, engineers, owners and others. Entries were evaluated on criteria such as complexity, attractiveness, safety, unusual challenges, completion time, workmanship, innovation and budget.
Awards of Excellence were given to the projects receiving the highest ratings in specialty contracting, such as electrical, mechanical, waterproofing and exteriors, as well as general contracting in such markets as commercial, healthcare, industrial and institutional.
Awards of Merit also were presented.
The association's Safety awards are presented annually to Georgia contractors who have had low rates of on-the-job injuries and who have demonstrated the highest commitment to safety and safety training.
ABC's Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) awards recognize member companies who employ effective safety practices on their job sites, based on 20 key elements of contractor safety programs such as management commitment, pre-planning for safety on job sites, safety training and resources committed to safety. The STEP process, which was developed and written by contractors, is a tool designed to objectively benchmark and evaluate safety programs, policies, procedures and training.
“Safety leadership matters, and ABC of Georgia and its members are certainly leading the way in embracing the Safety Training Evaluation Process,” said Greg Sizemore, ABC vice president of HSE and workforce development.
ABC Safety Forum Chair Pat Devero recognized the membership for their outstanding dedication to safety.
“It's been my honor to serve as your Safety Forum chair for the past two years,” he said. “The members that make up the ABC Safety Forum — operations leads, risk management partners, suppliers and equipment experts and safety professionals — are making a direct impact on the safety of all our workers.”
This year the Georgia Chapter presented 70 STEP awards, more than half of them at the two highest levels, as well as 45 Georgia Awards of Safety Excellence, which are presented to companies with both lost time and DART rates half the national average or less.
Keynote speaker Robert Maddux emphasized that owners and developers must make safety a priority, just as their contractors do. “Everybody is our client's client,” he said, “treat them that way,” referring to one of KDC's philosophy on safety. “As developers for some of the country's most important companies — including State Farm here in Atlanta — we must be involved from day one in the safety of the people we hire to build these jobs,” he said.
The event was sponsored by champion sponsors American Global, Juneau Construction, Parrish Construction Group, Sluss+Padgett, Bo Phillips Co., Fortune-Johnson General Contractors and Miller & Martin, as well as event sponsors Building Point Southeast, Fly & Form Structures, PlanGrid and United Forming.
