The Associated Builders & Contractors Inc. (ABC), Keystone Chapter was recognized with four 2003 Chapter Awards from the National Association. The presentations were made during the ABC National Convention held in Honolulu, HI.
• Meredith Cioffi, Alan Arment and Todd Staub, staff members, accepted the award for Excellence in Careers in Construction.
In 2003, the Keystone Chapter launched a major media campaign, “I Work Construction,” which promoted construction careers, raised the visibility of ABC member firms and promoted a positive image of the construction industry. The campaign also included two Web sites: www.iworkconstruction.com and www.learntobuild.net.
• Cindy Field and Alan Arment accepted award for Excellence in Diversity.
The Keystone Chapter realized one of its goals by establishing an aggressive diversity program in 2003 and created a multi-ethnic committee to develop and initiate a number of minority business programs for the construction industry.
• Hank Butler accepted the award for Excellence in Legal Rights and Strategies.
Using “in your face” legal tactics, the Keystone Chapter has taken the building trades off guard and put the chapter in a pro-active position. Its aggressive program included contractor town hall meetings; rewards for convictions on union vandalism charges; an active legal defense fund; and the establishment of the Web site: www.opencontracting.com.
• Sherry Evans and Alan Arment accepted the award for Excellence in Management Education.
After two years of planning, the Keystone Chapter kicked off its Construction Academy in 2003. Core courses include Leadership, Communications, Accounting, Legal Issues and Ethics. The Field Operations curricula includes Personnel Management and Negotiations; Safety Management; Construction Material and Systems; and Production Management and Analysis.
Jack Zimmer, ABC Keystone president said that he is “proud to represent ABC.” Dave Wenrich, 2003 chairman of the board and president of Wenrich Painting Inc., Ephrata, PA, also said that he is pleased with the programs ABC Keystone has developed.
