Construction Equipment Guide

Founded in 1967 by Joseph L. Wesley Sr., AmQuip offers crane rentals and related services in northeastern United States with cranes ranging in size from “small” machines such as 6-ton (5.4 t) industrial crane up to 550-ton (499 t) all-terrain and 600-ton (544 t) crawler cranes.

After entering the tower crane market in 2002, AmQuip continued to grow that segment of the business. In November 2004, AmQuip completed the purchase of approximately 20 additional cranes with the acquisition of a tower crane company located on the East Coast.

According to AmQuip, the company has one of the largest tower crane fleets in the eastern United States. Some of its cranes are currently working in Florida, Mississippi, Wisconsin, Ohio, Washington D.C., Maryland and Pennsylvania. The fleet consists of Potain and Peiner cranes, ranging in size from the 15-ton (13.6 t) MDT302 up to the 30-ton (27.2 t) SK575.

In order to enhance its position in the tower crane rental market, AmQuip has appointed Dennis Bates as the vice president of its Tower Crane Division. Bates has more than 30 years’ experience in the tower crane business.

He began working in the industry in 1975 for Brasfield & Gorrie where he was equipment manager for 10 years. He then worked in sales for American Pecco, Morrow Equipment, Noell/Preussag Group and a national crane rental company until 2004.

AmQuip also made an aggressive attempt to purchase a large competitor at the end of 2004. After offering more than $300 million to purchase the competitor (who was in Chapter 11 at the time), AmQuip decided to withdraw its offer and focus on a more targeted approach to serving its customers.

“We believe we will be able to continue to improve our fleet and improve customer service by spending the money on new equipment and facilities in our existing markets,” said Wesley Sr.

“We are going to re-invest in new equipment and add even more expertise and training to the people who work for AmQuip Corporation. By focusing on our East Coast operations, our national tower crane fleet and our Ohio facility, we feel we will be able to service our customers anywhere in the United States.”

In addition to the expansion into the tower crane market, AmQuip recently opened a new Cincinnati, OH, facility. At more than 12 acres, this facility will provide all crane rental needs.

“Our goal is to be a one-stop shop,” General Manager Frank Bardonaro said. “We are successful because of our ability to meet customer demand and respond instantaneously. Anything that the customer wants, we either have it or can obtain it immediately. There’s nothing we can’t do.”
