BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) The Vermont town of Bennington has appealed the federal government’s decision not to reimburse the town for work on a flood wall after Tropical Storm Irene.

The August 2011 storm damaged a levee between North Branch and Park Streets that had been built by the Army Corps of Engineers. Concerned that the damage could cause flooding, the town completed repair work that cost $214,000, the Bennington Banner reported.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency rejected the town’s request for reimbursement, saying the corps was responsible for the work. The town said the corps was unable to respond quickly enough.

"That was probably one of the most dangerous things. So we have filed an appeal for that,” said Bennington Planning Director Daniel Monks.

It’s expected to be several months before FEMA rules on the appeal.

The town also is expected to appeal the amount of money it received for sediment removal from the Roaring Brook.

“We’re still dealing with the sediment amount and armor issue. They just threw a number at it and didn’t look at the actual numbers. We have evidence about what we spent”’ Monks said.
