Bomag BPR65/70D Protects Engine From Site Damage

Sat August 05, 2006 - National Edition
Construction Equipment Guide

The new Bomag BPR65/70D reversible plate compactor features an engine hood made of high-strength, fine-grained steel that helps protect the engine and other internal components from job-site and transportation damage.

The hood is hinged and swings forward to allow easy access to the whole engine. Large, integral service ports permit access to the most common maintenance points without having to lift the entire hood.

The BPR65/70D offers a 13.1-hp (9.7 kW) Hatz air-cooled diesel engine that is 22-percent more powerful than the one on the model it replaces. This additional power, combined with new base-plate geometry and optimized positioning of the center of gravity, results in a 16- percent faster working speed of 92 ft. (28 m) per minute; a 7-percent increase in maximum centrifugal force to 15,525 lbs. (7,042 kg); and improved gradeability of 35 percent compared with 30 percent on the previous model.

The BPR65/70D is well-suited to a wide range of uses on soil, aggregate and paving block. Applications include trenches and pipelines; footpaths; road and railroad work; sub-bases and foundations; backfill, embankments and bridge abutments; and landscaping.

Maximum vibration frequency is 4,020 vibrations per minute. Both vibration frequency and centrifugal force are easily adjusted with the throttle control. Heavy-duty base plates feature reinforced edges and offer maximum working widths of 21.7 in. (55 cm) — 27.6 in. (70 cm) with standard wear strips installed.

A hydraulic travel control system ensures a smooth, easy transition from forward to reverse travel modes. The system allows the operator to change travel direction or to hold the plate in a neutral position by simply touching the exclusive thumb-tip operating levers.

Other standard equipment, such as a fully protected V-belt, lifetime lubricated vibration bearings and an automatic low-oil level shutdown feature, help keep maintenance concerns to a minimum.

The BPR65/70D includes such safety features as built-in steering rod buffers and an automatic backup protection switch. The buffers reduce hand/arm vibration and increase operator comfort, whereas the backup protection switch engages forward travel in the event that the operator backs into an obstacle while traveling in reverse.

The steering handle also adjusts to different working heights to accommodate any operator.

For added convenience, the machine’s ignition switch is mounted on the control handle. Though the engine includes an electric starter, a backup starting crank is included for emergency starting. A single, balanced foldable lifting point simplifies loading and unloading.
