DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Construction on a South Florida development has been halted after workers found bones that may have been buried in a black cemetery.

The remains were spotted Friday on a five-acre plot in Deerfield Beach where 69 townhouses are being built.

The Sun Sentinel reports (http://bit.ly/1QzsDeT ) the former churchyard was believed to have been used as a burial ground for blacks who were kept from being buried in segregated white cemeteries.

Experts will work to determine whether the remains are human before deciding how to proceed.
