NAGS HEAD, NC (AP) Work schedules on the bridge over Oregon Inlet will be altered during the busy summer tourist season to accommodate traffic on NC Route 12, the state Department of Transportation said.

The DOT has been closing one lane of the 43-year-old Herbert C. Bonner Bridge during the day to allow for maintenance work. Now, if needed, the lane closure will occur between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday through Labor Day. There will be no lane closures Friday through Sunday.

“Repairing sections of concrete deteriorated by age and exposure to the salt environment has become a routine procedure required to keep the bridge in service,” said Sterling Baker, a DOT maintenance engineer.

Work should be completed in November.

An assessment of maintenance needed to keep the bridge open until a replacement is built is expected to be finished no later than early fall, the DOT said.
