The Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project reached a significant construction milestone in July as crews completed the first concrete pour for the foundation of the new companion bridge, marking the start of work on the permanent structures that will support the new span.

The milestone represents the transition from preliminary work to the construction of the bridge's permanent foundation.

According to project officials, the first concrete placement is the beginning of construction on the bridge's structural foundation, a key step in delivering the companion span that will eventually operate alongside the existing Brent Spence Bridge.

Crews from The Walsh Group, one of the project's joint venture partners, marked the occasion by continuing a company tradition that dates back more than 100 years. During the concrete placement, workers embedded a Miraculous Medal in the foundation.

According to The Walsh Group, the tradition has been observed since the company's founding and symbolizes protection and dedication to the project. The medal serves as a reminder of the company's commitment to completing construction safely.

With foundation construction now under way, crews will continue building the permanent support structures that will carry the companion bridge over the Ohio River. Additional construction activity will become increasingly visible in the coming months as the bridge begins to rise above the river.

The Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project is one of the largest transportation infrastructure investments in the region and is designed to improve safety, reduce congestion and increase capacity along the heavily traveled Interstate 71/75 corridor connecting Kentucky and Ohio. The new companion bridge will work in conjunction with the existing Brent Spence Bridge to better accommodate passenger and freight traffic through the corridor.
