Caterpillar's Latest Smartphone Proves Perfect for Jobsite Needs

- National Edition
Emily Buenzle

Caterpillar recently announced its latest smartphone—yes, Caterpillar, maker of large-scale construction equipment, has been busy developing a smaller key worksite tool these past few years. The company's last smartphone model, the durable Cat S60 has a thermal camera built in, perfect for the job site.

Caterpillar announced its newest model—the Cat S61—at the Mobile World Congress 2018, which boasts an even better camera than before, The Verge reported. Specs include:

  • A greater image contrast with a larger temperature range, reaching between -4 to 752 degrees Fahrenheit;
  • Better resolution, where the camera can lay HD images over the thermal feed. In comparison, the S60 was only able to take 640 x 480 VGA images from the phone's regular rear camera and combine them with the thermal feed;
  • New, live-streamed thermal imaging, which the company said will give workers the ability to check on an issue with a worker in a different location—not for Live Streaming of Facebook, The Verge reported;
  • An indoor air quality sensor from Sensirion to monitor the air around the user and provide a warning if it is unsafe;
  • A laser-assisted distance measurement system that will measure both distance and area automatically;
  • A 5.2-in. 1080-pixel display;
  • A touchscreen that can work with gloves or wet fingers;
  • A high level of dust and water resistance—the S61 can survive in water up to 9.8 ft. for up to one hour;
  • An aluminum-reinforced frame; and
  • Front- and rear-facing cameras.

The S61, like its predecessor, is made by Bulitt Group, not Caterpillar, and when released in Q2 of 2018, will retail for around $1,105.
