The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) along with Sema Construction Inc. started to mobilize equipment for construction of a new full diamond interchange at C-470 and Alameda Parkway Nov. 12.

This $14.2 million new interchange construction project is being funded by a partnership between the Green Tree Metro District No. 1, the city of Lakewood and Jefferson County.

“Due to the project’s proximity to C-470, we have been working closely with the project sponsors, planning and designing the new interchange,” said CDOT’s Regional Traffic and Safety Engineer Tony DeVito.

“Now that construction is starting, CDOT’s involvement is to maintain oversight of the highway lane closures and project progress.”

Construction includes widening lanes on Alameda Parkway approaching the interchange; widening the bridge over C-470 by four lanes to accommodate the turn lanes and; building new concrete on and off ramps, retaining walls, new storm drainage, curb and gutter, sidewalks and traffic signals. The new interchange was also designed with special aesthetics, such as unique ornamental railings, pillars and colors.

“This area is a popular hiking and biking spot and unfortunately the bike path will be impacted,” said Roger Jameson, CDOT project engineer. “We plan to make every effort to keep the trails open and accessible for outdoor enthusiasts.”

Construction of this new interchange is scheduled to be complete and open to traffic June 30, 2008.
