Clayco Construction Company has started construction of a 150,000-sq.-ft. (13,935 sq m) corporate headquarters facility for Flexi-Mat, one of the market leaders in the pet bedding industry. The project is the first building to be constructed in the new Crossroad Business Center in Plainfield, IL.

Clayco Chicago is serving as design-builder for the one-story manufacturing and headquarters building, which is scheduled for a fast-track completion in March 2004. Constructed of pre-cast concrete wall panels and a conventional steel structure, the building will feature 28-ft. (8.5 m) clear-height ceilings in the manufacturing portion of the project and 10,000 sq. ft. (929 sq m) of office space.

“We primarily use a design-build construction method of pre-cast concrete walls over structural steel framing for projects in the Chicago market,” said Trevor Ryor, project manager. “We have found this method to be particularly efficient in the Chicago winters, and the delivery method is extremely fast track. We can work through the winter and still deliver a project like this in about six months.”

Clayco’s project team on Flexi-Mat includes Kevin McKenna, project executive; Ryor, project manager; Frank Baum, project estimator; Pete Woolley, project superintendent; and Kathy Nosek, construction administration. Joining Clayco on the project are Heitman Architects Inc. of Itasca, IL, V3 Consultants of Woodridge, IL, civil engineers, and Alta Engineering LTD, of Rolling Meadows, IL, structural engineers.

Flexi-Mat was founded in 1948 to manufacture anti-fatigue floor mats for barbers, beauticians and industrial users. The company later expanded its product selection to include pillow products for the home; and pillows, mattresses, and specialty pads for the health care market.

By the early 1970s, the company introduced its first line of innovative, unique pet products. During the early 1990s, Flexi-Mat grew rapidly as the pet bedding category expanded into the mass retailers, core distributors and mail order catalogs.

Flexi-Mat continues to be one of the market leaders in the pet bedding industry and now services customers globally, including South America, Japan, Europe, and South Africa.
