Midnight traffic stopped and local TV cameras rolled late in May as workers from Clayco Construction Company lifted a 140-foot-long and 17-foot-wide steel and concrete pedestrian bridge weighing nearly 200,000 lbs. on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus.
The structure is supported by concrete supports and steel trusses and will feature a concrete deck. A pre-finished aluminum roof system and stainless-steel metal panels will provide protection from the elements.
When a 2001 study found that 69 percent of pedestrians did not use the designated crosswalk to cross College Avenue, the University looked for an alternative to the existing system. The new bridge will provide safe passage between Bingham Group Residence Halls and the new Virginia Avenue Residence Halls and Dining Facility.
Clayco is general contractor for the project, which will be completed before students return in August.
Laying the Groundwork for Play
Clayco Construction Company Detroit recently led the effort to transform the Edgemont School playground in Belleville, MI, as part of its first annual “Caring For Kids” program.
Clayco employees worked with volunteer subcontractors, businesses, parents and staff to complete improvements for the playground.
