A construction worker has been winched to safety after he fell into a pit at a work site in Melbourne.

Australian news channel 9NEWS is reporting that a construction worker has been winched to safety after he fell 22 feet into a pit at a work site in Melbourne's north on Wednesday.

Specialist fire crews were brought in to rescue the man at the Epping construction site just before 3pm.

It is believed he injured his knee in the fall and was taken to hospital in a stable condition.
