SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) The steeple is in sight for Live Oak’s 22,000-sq.-ft. “green” church.

Solar panels, a rainwater catching system to irrigate landscaping, pervious asphalt to catch storm run-off, a rooftop garden and building materials aimed at promoting air quality are in building plans submitted to Santa Cruz County.

United Methodist Church of Santa Cruz Pastor Michael Love said construction could begin this spring with completion in June 2009.

The church will be home to three congregations — Live Oak, Grace and First United Methodist. The vision for the new church evolved after Grace United Methodist Church burned down in October 2000.
