OAK CREEK, Wis. (AP) Construction of the $2.15 billion Oak Creek Power Plant is approximately 25 percent complete and running slightly ahead of schedule, the project director said.

Tom Metcalfe, vice president of We Energies subsidiary We Power, which will build and own the power plant and lease it to We Energies, said Feb. 12 approximately 1,500 workers are on site on any given day.

“That will increase to a peak of a little more than 2,000, and will hold steady at approximately 2,000 for 2008,” he added.

The new complex is to produce enough electricity for 615,000 homes.

The first of two new coal-fired power generators is scheduled to start firing in 2009 and the other one in 2010.

The general contractor is San Francisco-based Bechtal Power Corp.
