CLEVELAND (AP) - Crews have begun taking down the old 1959 Innerbelt Bridge in Cleveland, with trusses cut away making a big splash in the Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH’-guh) River.
Engineers designed a plan for the removal of each truss so the span remains stable during demolition. The steel trusses that fall into the river are being fished out by cranes and put on a barge. Some are being lowered to the ground.
The Plain Dealer (http://bit.ly/S1uD7U ) reports that the river will be closed through 6 a.m. Friday so the span can be removed to make way for a new bridge.
This is the second of four spans being manually removed. The remaining spans of the bridge will be brought down by controlled explosions next month.
