When Concrete Express Inc. needed a slipform paver, they came to Allen to fill the bill. This Denver, CO-based contractor needed a machine they could depend on as well as one that could give them the ride quality they had to meet.
Concrete Express’ job was to build access streets to Interstate 70 at the Brighten Boulevard interchange in Denver, CO. It had to meet certain ride specifications on each pour or Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) would not accept the work. To meet specifications, Allen provided the contractor with a Model 14-36 two-track slipform paver. This paver was equipped with a 290 hp (216 kW) Cat 3306 engine, 18 vibrators, two center bar inserters, two side bar inserters, a rear belt finisher, a rear fogging system, a heavy-duty track system and an 8-in. (20 cm) adjustable paving pan extension to achieve Department of Transportation ride numbers.
Allen delivered the paver to the job site in Denver with the “Paving Team” following close behind to assist the contractor in setting up the machine for the first pour. The machine was set to pour a section of the street 24 ft. 3 in. (7.4 m) wide and 11 in. (28 cm) thick with a curb on one side. With the light towers shining, the concrete began to be placed. Concrete Express began building curb within the first 12 in. (31 cm) of paving. The bar inserters placed the dowel bars every 30 in. (76 cm) at the center of the slab as well as the side. The belt finisher, rear fogging system and the burlap drag all worked in unison requiring little handwork behind the machine.
When the dust settled and concrete hardened, the profilagraph was run. The Allen 14-36 two track slipform paver provided the quality job that the CDOT was looking for.
