Diversified Fall Protection has launched an updated version of its P20 Portable Overhead Truss System, a relocatable fall protection system that provides 20 ft. of overhead rigid rail for workers performing tasks at height.
Designed to be moved into position using a forklift, the P20 creates an overhead anchorage where permanent fall protection is unavailable or impractical. Once positioned and properly counterweighted, the system can accommodate up to two workers in fall arrest, according to the company.
The updated P20 is available in two configurations. Customers can order it as a turnkey system assembled by Diversified Fall Protection or as a new DIY kit that includes the materials needed for customer assembly. The kit provides a more cost-effective option for customers with the equipment and capabilities to assemble the system themselves.
Diversified Fall Protection has been an industry leader in overhead fall protection through its patented TD3 Triangular Truss Rigid Rail systems, which have been installed inside facilities and above railcar operations across the United States. The P20 delivers the same versatility and effectiveness, but in a portable system. If a forklift can reach the work area, the P20 can go there too.
Applications
According to OSHA 1910.28, employers are required by law to provide fall protection when workers are exposed to a fall hazard of four feet or greater. In many situations, including loading and unloading freight trucks, repairing heavy equipment, and performing railcar or tanker operations, workers may be more than four feet above the ground without an overhead or nearby structure suitable for attaching a fall protection anchorage.
Overhead rigid rail systems are ideal for this type of work. For operations where work is consistently performed in one dedicated area, Diversified's non-portable L and T systems provide permanent overhead fall protection. Because these systems remain in place, they are ready for use without needing to be moved and counterweighted first. The tradeoff is that they protect a fixed work area and cannot be relocated as operational needs change.
The P20 is designed for companies that need greater flexibility. It provides the same high-quality fall protection as the fixed systems, but across multiple work areas without requiring a permanent system at each location. A forklift can move the P20 to the desired location and place the required counterweight on its platform. Once positioned, the system can accommodate up to two workers in fall arrest.
The P20 can be placed close to the work area without obstructing the vehicle or equipment being accessed. Its 20-ft. rigid rail gives workers the mobility needed to complete their tasks efficiently and safely.
Why Overhead Rigid Rail?
When fall arrest equipment must be used, overhead anchorages offer significant advantages over foot-level anchorages. Because they use a self-retracting lifeline, they reduce free-fall distance, generate lower fall forces on the body and lessen the potential severity of an injury when a fall occurs.
Unlike single-point anchor systems, rigid rail systems use a trolley to keep the worker's anchor point directly overhead. This reduces the potential for a swing fall as the worker moves away from the original anchorage position.
