Spanning more than 150 mi. from the heart of St. Louis, Gateway Dredging & Contracting LLC. supplies a variety of operations along the Missouri and Mississippi rivers with sand and sediment as well as construction support utilizing a Liebherr LH 60 C Industry Litronic for optimal material handling.

Under the Missouri sun, the Gateway Dredging team works to move thousands of tons of sand and sediment per day for local construction operations in the St. Louis area. Leveraging the power and strength of the Liebherr LH 60 material handler, the team unloads approximately 500 tons of sand per hour, supporting critical construction projects along the local waterways.

“We have had this machine for a year a half now — the name of the game is uptime, and so far, we have had great success with the Liebherr,” said Terry Bangert, chief operating officer of Gateway Dredging & Contracting.

Established in 2011, Gateway Dredging & Contracting LLC. was formed through the partnership of two dredging companies, Limited Leasing Company and Jotori Inc., both of which specialized in supplying materials to dock locations since the 1970s and 80s.

Gateway Dredging & Contracting utilizes a fleet of material handlers to unload sand for multiple operations along the Missouri and Mississippi rivers including river, fine and low lignite sand. The company also provides construction project support including barge rental and charters, boat charters and towing assistance, as well as drilling support, painting and bridge maintenance.

“We run almost every day,” said Bangert. “Maintenance has been easy and friendly. We have also worked with the Central Power staff to keep us running for scheduled maintenance, and so far, it has been a very reliable machine.”

Liebherr USA Co. offers an extensive dealer network throughout the nation to ensure reputable sales, service, parts, and rentals across the country. Gateway Dredging & Contracting worked closely with Liebherr dealer, Central Power Systems & Services, for both sales and service of the material handler, noting the main criteria when purchasing their machine included both availability and cost.

Central Power Systems & Services provides a wide range of new and used Liebherr earthmoving and material handling technology equipment within the South-Central United States, including articulated dump trucks, dozers, excavators, wheel loaders and material handlers.

Efficient Handling

From drive variants with diesel or electric motors and both mobile and crawler undercarriage options, Liebherr offers customized material handling solutions that combine stability and mobility and are characterized by maximum reach heights and loads, according to the company.

Liebherr material handlers achieve highly efficient handling cycles and emphasize performance through versatility in applications to meet each customer's specific needs, according to the company.

“From an operator standpoint, they like the control system, the hydraulic cab riser, and their viewpoint. They really love that they can see into the hopper and the barge,” said Bangert.

The Liebherr LH 60 C material handler was designed for heavy duty material handling of scrap, timber and harbor-related operations making it the ideal fit for Gateway Dredging's sand operations. The material handling machine is equipped with the patented Liebherr ERC System (energy recovery system), giving the machine a boost in terms of performance and fuel savings providing Gateway Dredging greater material handling performance and cost savings, according to the company.

“On this particular project, fuel savings is something that's got our attention right now,” said Bangert. “There is technology on the Liebherr that makes it more fuel efficient and provides a noticeable fuel burn difference.”

Liebherr also offers a variety of attachments for material handling machines ensuring customers are always optimally matched to respective options including quick coupling systems, multi-tine grabs, clamshell buckets, sorting grapples and more.

Whether supporting a construction project or a barge-based application, Gateway Dredging delivers reliable and efficient material handling solutions with the Liebherr LH 60 C material handler. Engineered for versatility and performance, this machine enables Gateway Dredging to handle demanding operational requirements with precision, saving time and money according to the company.

“It's a good, solid machine at a fair market price that does the job that we want to do,” said Bangert. “Certainly, in the future, Gateway would look to Liebherr if we had machines or fleet needs — Liebherr would be at the top of our list if we are going to add more equipment to grow our operation.”
